What is the practical difference between transmission-driven and live PTO? I am looking for a basic manual transmission tractor, and the NH TC29 and TC33 manual transmission tractors don't have live PTO drive. I'll be using a rear mower and roto tiller, among other things.

I think the simplest way to explain it is: With a live PTO you can bring the tractor to a complete stop and keep the PTO's running at full speed.
With a transmission driven PTO, generally speaking, you have to push in the clutch at some point when stopping the tractor, and when you do the power to the PTO's is cut off.
The exception would be that some(very few)tractors have a two stage clutch that allows you to depress the clutch enough to change gears or stop the tractor without interrupting power to the PTO's ....

I think that if you look through the posts on the site you will see another discussion on this.
Most larger tractors have a independent or live PTO's. For example Kioti starts at the DK35, but the newer CK-20 also has live PTO. The Deere have independent or live above the 4100, 4210 - 4XXX.
The 4x verson of the TD-30 has live PTO also.

I believe you'll find all of the new MFWD manual tranny machines have dual stage clutches available (might be an option).
My Deere 670 (a 1991 model) has the single stage clutch. A dual stage was optional, but I don't have one of my machine.
I strongly reccomend you go for the live or independent PTO. I really like my 670, but I would definitely prefer a live or independent PTO. I'm thinking about trading this sweet little tractor on a machine that has a dual stage clutch or independendent PTO. Since I'm not looking for a hydro transmission, that kind of limits my options.
I did price converting my machine, but it's cost prohibitive. ....

I think the NH's have an independent PTO. That means it has a single stage clutch and a lever/switch to engage/disgngage the PTO. Whatever you do with the clutch, the PTO keeps running. The live PTO uses a two stage clutch. When you shift, you press the pedal half down and you can change gears, but the PTO keeps running. Push the clutch all the way and the PTO stops. Bottomline, the NH's have the best PTO with manual trannys.

At least in 2000, you could get a live PTO with the manual transmission on a TC29, and I think the TC33. Not on the TC25 though; that is why I moved up to the 29.

Bill, I saw a recent dealer ad pertaining to the "new" TC29 and 33's. The indication was the PTO is now independent like the TC35, 40 and 45. Just as there are no more "plain jane" 29 and 33's with gears. They all now come with the deluxe features previously found only in the hydro's. I was told this was to differentiate them more from the TC30.

According to the specs on the NH website, which was recently updated, the 29 and 33 have trans driven on the manual and independent on the hydros. I checked before I posted.

And I double checked out of curiosity. According to the spec sheet I saw the TC29 & 33 have live PTO's manual or hydro. The TC 18 thru 24 have trans driven in the manual and live in the hydro. It also stated the manual transmission was 9/3 which means no shuttle. I would check with a dealer. There is this just too much inconsistency in the specs. The ad i saw specifically mentioned a TC33 shuttle and independent PTO. You just can't believe everything you read!
